OKLAHOMA CITY-The Council for American Islamic Relations in Oklahoma released its 2016 Civil Rights report Thursday showing a dramatic increase in complaints regarding vandalism and property damage to Islamic centers.
A similar report showed an increase in hate crime-related incidents that involved violence.
A few key findings of the report included trends showing increases in complaints involving vandalism, an increase in assault, and, in the latter half of 2016, an increase in demands to go to immigration services.
“This report is a vital part of our organization’s mission to defend civil liberties,” said Civil Rights Director Veronica Laizure. “It allows us to track, year by year, the status of Muslim civil rights in our state and to note trends that show the progress we’ve made and the work we still have yet to do.”
