DEARBORN
– Several city police cars shut down a large portion of
Schaefer Road on Friday, Dec. 16 after what
witnesses described as a shootout between police and at least one
civilian that ended with a crash right in front of the ACCESS
building sign.
According to a
report from WDIV quoting Dearborn police, an officer and suspect were
both hurt during the incident and suffered non-life-threatening
injuries.
Witness Ahmad
Hachem, 16, heard of a car chase on Warren Avenue from his mother and
began walking from his house on Bingham Street nearby toward
Schaefer.
Hachem said he
heard a car accident and about five single gunshots at about 3:10
p.m. before police swarmed and blocked off the area, preventing him
from seeing more of what was unfolding near the area of the ACCESS
building.
Another witness,
Ali Al-Zayadi, 19, said he was driving southbound on Schaefer Road to
go pay a house bill when he also heard the gunshots.
He said he was was
shocked and looked back to see that a police officer had pulled
another car over and that at least two men were shooting at each
other.
Debris including
clothes and shoes was strewn about Schaefer Road near ACCESS in front
of the crash scene, where a silver sedan rested on the grass with its
back right side and back right door crumpled up.
The driver of the
sedan reportedly crashed into a truck after driving erratically,
speeding, and running red lights during the chase after previously
ignoring an attempt by officers to stop it. The suspect also
reportedly bumped into the officer’s car.
Witnesses on the
scene were not sure of the identities or appearances of the shooters
or drivers as of about 4:30 p.m.
Speculation around
the scene earlier was that an Arab American male may have been shot.
