Canada’s largest Protestant church denomination, the United Church of Canada, voted on Wednesday to boycott goods produced in Israeli settlements on the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The decision came on Wednesday after nearly six hours of contentious debate according to a report in the Toronto Star.
The group named the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands as a major challenge to a two-state solution in the Middle East. A report released by a church working group last May provided the basis for the motion.
Voters were reportedly “substantially in favor” of the motion according to the report.
Some members of the Canadian Jewish community, however, issued a “swift condemnation” of the vote. Many accuse the church of “taking sides,” as said by Shimon Fogel, CEO of the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs.
A vote will be held by the general council will vote again Friday on whether to confirm the proposals as official church policy. The council makes up more than 350 delegates from all across Canada, and the church boasts nearly three million members.
