One in 3 American adults are obese. Rates of obesity in children have nearly tripled in the last 30 years. And the AMA (American Medical Association) now classifies obesity as a “disease.”
Being overweight has become one of the greatest health issues of our time; often the direct cause of such chronic conditions as heart disease, high blood pressure and Type 2 Diabetes.
But what to do about it? Is there anything new?
Introduced into the U.S. about 4 years ago, the Ideal Protein program may provide a new approach and some new insights into the weight loss/weight management field.
“It’s a rapid weight loss program that also helps maintain and support muscle mass,” stated Lina Dagher, registered dietitian, diet coach and founder of Personal Nutrition Solutions, located in West Dearborn and Birmingham.
Developed in France over 25 years ago, Ideal Protein is popular in Europe and has been available in Canada for the last 10 years. Centers are also growing in the Middle East in Beirut and Kuwait, said Dagher.
What is Ideal Protein?
It’s an FDA approved diet and weight management program, which, Dagher says, consists of 4 weight-loss phases, a simple eating plan of both grocery and special Ideal Protein foods, available at the clinic and important one-on-one coaching.
What exactly can her clients expect?
“Noticeable appetite control and a reduction in cravings, plus improved energy. Women can expect a loss of 2-4 lbs, and men 3-5 lbs., per week,” said Dagher.
She added, “This program provides just the right amount of protein, vitamins and minerals that healthy bodies need daily.”
How is the Ideal Protein program different?
“Most attempts at weight loss focus on just reducing overall calories, or stepping up exercise. Either approach alone has limitations,” explained Dagher. “Restricting calories works initially, until metabolism slows. Reaching your goal seems to take forever. Exercise regimens fail when people can’t, or won’t maintain the discipline needed for daily physical activity.”
Unlike a lot of other plans, Ideal Protein is fairly rapid in the weight loss phase. Once accomplished, however, Dagher stressed the deeper importance of understanding “why” the weight gain happened, reoccurs, and how to deal with future weight and hunger management.
“A lot of people are so frustrated with yo-yo dieting. They lose the weight, but eventually gain it back. I focus on nutrition education and problem-solving skills to ensure success, both while dieting and later on in their life-long weight management,” said Dagher.
“It’s so gratifying to see clients experience a marked improvement in their quality of life, often including the reduction, or elimination of medications,” she added.
