DEARBORN — The Iraqi American who burned copies of the Qur’an in front of a Dearborn mosque in June is being fined $400 for two misdemeanors. Ali Hassan Al-Asaidi, 51, was fined by Chief Judge Sam Salamey of the 19 District Court in Dearborn with littering and burning in front of the Karbala Islamic Education Center.
Stemming from a disagreement on money with a Muslim man at a mosque, Al-Asaidi was upset at the religious leaders at the mosque for their lack of help in returning his money. He began burning Qur’ans on June 10, but was arrested and charged on June 25 after burning the holy books the same day. Al-Asaidi was released after posting bond for $500.
Al-Asaidi has to pay $200 for each misdemeanor offense. He paid for the burning charge, and still owes $200 for the littering offense.
