DETROIT — According to the FBI, Dr. Farid Fata, who was charged last year with misdiagnosing patients and recommending the wrong treatments, was interested in investing in luxury apartments overseas.
Fata, 48, was charged with fraudulently billing Medicare millions of dollars in the process and enriching himself. Fata could be convicted of additional money laundering charges, which would increase the monetary fine he owes the government. He is serving time in jail on a $9 million bond.
Writing to a business associate in 2010 Fata said, “I need a favor from you. My dad has a great deal on a castle all furnished in Adma/Lebanon! Can you please get in contact with my dad and go see the house! It is for $3,000,000…”
In an email dated July 2012, Fata wrote to a drug manufacturer after a grant for his charity “Swan For Life” was denied. “I expect further support from AMAG, Please proceed ASAP. I will be happy to talk to Dr. XXXXXX to reconsider IF ANYBODY DESERVES SUPPORT IT IS US! i.e. SFLCF Please advise, Dr. Fata.”
Fata practiced medicine at his Michigan Hematology Oncology Centers in Clarkston, Bloomfield Hills, Lapeer, Sterling Heights, Troy and Oak Park. He allegedly administered chemotherapy to patients who had no chance of survival and intentionally misdiagnosed patients, all so he could charge Medicare for high-cost procedures.
