DETROIT — A Bangladeshi American father of seven was shot and killed while driving his cab Saturday morning.

 Hamtramck resident Joynul Islam, 60, was a cab driver for Checker Cab. The incident occurred as he was dropping a passenger off on the 600 block of Collingwood Street, near Woodward, around 2 a.m. Saturday.

According to some reports, the passenger refused to pay, a few words were exchanged and then Islam was shot.

According to Detroit Police, he lost control of his cab after being shot and  crashed into a tree. That was the reported cause of death.

The Bangladeshi American community of Hamtramck is condemning Islam’s death and also begging for gun violence to stop.

The investigation is ongoing.
