ROYAL OAK — Voters in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties approved a 10-year renewal of the property tax supporting the Detroit Zoo, extending funding from 2028 through 2037.
According to preliminary results, the proposal received 74 percent support in Wayne County, with approximately 465,000 votes in favor; 71 percent in Oakland County, with about 434,000 supporting votes and 69 percent in Macomb County, with roughly 255,000 votes in favor.
Approval will not result in a tax increase. Instead, the measure will continue the annual levy of 0.1 mill — equivalent to 10 cents per $1,000 of a property’s taxable value — to fund approximately one-third of the operating budget for the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak and the Belle Isle Nature Center in Detroit.
The revenue paid by property owners in the three counties, estimated at approximately $18.8 million annually, will support the care of more than 2,000 animals and facility maintenance, helping keep the zoo a safe and enjoyable family destination for another decade.
In return for their tax dollars, residents of the three counties will receive discounts and special services for children and older adults. These include continued funding for day camps, outreach activities, after-school programs and free or discounted school field trips benefiting local school districts.
Voters in the three counties first approved property tax funding for the Detroit Zoo in 2008 and renewed it by a comfortable margin in 2016.
