WESTLAND — The City of Westland has opened several cooling centers around the city for the entire week, in response to extreme temperatures reaching above 90 degrees in the city.

The centers will include bottled water provided free of charge, along with other amenties to help keep residents cool. Those attending are asked to provide their own reading materials or any personal items they require.

The hot and humid air is especially threatening to elderly residents and those with pre-existing health conditions, a press release from the city said.

The following locations will be turned into 24-hour cooling centers:

-Westland Police Station Lobby, located at 36701 Ford Road

-Westland Fire Station 1, located at 35710 Central City Parkway

The following locations will be open during limited hours:

-Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Road; Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

-Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, located at 32150 Dorsey; 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Tuesday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; Wednesday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

-William P. Faust Public Library, 6123 Central City Parkway; Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.- 9 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

-Westland Friendship Center, 1119 N. Newburgh; Monday & Wednesday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Tuesday & Thursday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon

In addition to these locations, residents can also visit the H20 Zone Spray Park at 1901 N. Carlson, seven days a week from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., or the Westland Shopping Center, which is located at 35000 Warren Road. A full list of cooling centers in Wayne County can be found here.
