DEARBORN — Just two days after being reinstated, Dearborn Fire Chief Joseph Murray was charged with two counts of operating while intoxicated.

One count is related to his blood alcohol content and one to observations made by police at the time of his arrest on Aug. 29 when he was pulled over in Dearborn Heights after allegedly going 15 mph over the speed limit and drifting through lanes near Telegraph Road and Carlysle Street.

The body cam footage depicted the encounter with police, including Murray allegedly refusing a Breathalyzer test, using slurred speech and having difficulty balancing during a series of sobriety tests.

The announcement of charges from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office comes right after Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud reinstated Murray to his position after having been on administrative leave since Aug. 30.

“After careful consideration, my administration has decided to reinstate Joseph Murray as chief of the Dearborn Fire Department,” Hammoud said in a statement. “Chief Murray returned to work today, Oct. 30, 2023. The choice to retain Chief Murray derives from balancing a two-decades-long career in public service and the humility to not evaluate an individual in their darkest moments. I am confident that Dearborn residents will be served well by Chief Murray as he works towards continuing his duties in full.”

Originally from Chicago, Murray became a firefighter in 2001 and joined the Dearborn Fire Department in 2004 before being appointed fire chief in 2012.

He is expected to be arraigned in the 20th District Court in Dearborn Heights on Dec. 1.

The city has not commented on the charges being filed against Murray at the time of publication.
