DEARBORN HEIGHTS – City Council Chairman Hassan Ahmad has been appointed to the Wayne County Commission to fill a seat vacated by David Knezek, who was recently appointed president of Henry Ford College.

Ahmad has an engineering degree from Oakland University and a master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix. He has spent the last two decades in the real estate industry, where he currently works as an associate broker at RE/MAX Leading Edge. Ahmad also serves as the president of the Dearborn Area Board of Realtors, serves on the Michigan Board of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons and volunteers with local nonprofits such as LAHC, the Dearborn Heights Fireman’s Burn Drive, Michigan Veterans Foundation and Habitat for Humanity. Ahmad has served as city councilman since being elected in 2020 and was appointed council chairman in 2025.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to have been appointed to serve on the Wayne County Commission representing the residents of Dearborn Heights, Garden City, and Inkster,” Ahmad said. “I want to thank my fellow commissioners for placing their trust in me. I extend my sincere appreciation to President David Knezek for his recommendation, to Commissioner Sam Baydoun for the nomination, and to Commissioner Jonathan Kinloch for seconding the nomination. I am also grateful to all of the commissioners for their support and for the opportunity to serve.”

Knezek said that selecting a replacement on the commission was a daunting task given the high number of qualified and active residents across the district.

“I believe Commissioner Ahmad will transition seamlessly into this role given his extensive experience both serving on and leading a legislative body and his demonstrated commitment to being an engaging and hands-on leader,” he said. “He is now taking that commitment to public service to a new and higher level, while doubling the number of constituents he serves. I am confident the residents of Dearborn Heights, Garden City, and Inkster will be well served by his kindness, collegiality, and passion for helping others.”

Ahmad’s appointment creates a vacancy on the Dearborn Heights City Council. Under the city charter, the remaining members of the City Council are expected to appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of the term.

Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun said he is proud of Ahmad for being appointed to this role.

“It is a very bittersweet moment as we will be losing him on the City Council, however I am equally proud to see him take on this important new role in service to the residents of Wayne County,” he said. “His unwavering commitment to public service and to the residents of Dearborn Heights has made a lasting impact on our community, and I have no doubt these qualities will serve the people of Wayne County exceptionally well.”

Ahmad said that he takes the role of Wayne County Commissioner and serving the residents of Dearborn Heights, Garden City, and Inkster very seriously.

“My goal is to be a strong and effective voice for our communities, advocate for their needs, and work tirelessly to bring county resources, investment, and opportunities back to our residents,” he said. “I also look forward to working closely with Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans, Deputy County Executive Assad I. Turfe, my fellow commissioners, local elected officials, and community leaders to strengthen our communities, improve public services, and deliver meaningful results for the people we serve. I am eager to get to work and remain committed to serving with integrity, transparency, and dedication. Together, we can build a stronger future for Dearborn Heights, Garden City, Inkster, and all of Wayne County.”

The appointment takes effect immediately.
