Dr. Syed Soharwardy, who heads the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, a Sufi organization located in Calgary, is traveling to several cities across Canada on a monthly basis to give lectures on behalf of Muslims Against Terrorism (MAT).  According to Soharwardy, “Islamophobia is the fastest growing irrational fear in the world.” Muslims Against Terrorism undertakes to educate the public as to the religious obligation for Muslims to be peaceful.  Both Muslims and non-Muslims are to be helped to understand that Islam rejects terrorism and racism. 

MAT finds the causes of  “very small pockets”of extremism in the Muslim community as three: the history of oppression of Muslims by colonialism, imperialism, and communism; continued oppression by the West through secularism and capitalism; and the influence of self-appointed Muslim scholars who have falsely interpreted the obligation of jihad and who practice and preach violence.
