DEARBORN — Back by popular demand, the 2008 “Dearborn Stars” talent competition will again seek out the area’s best talent for performances at the Homecoming festival in August.
The second annual talent contest, which features various abilities at all ages, is scheduled to take place July 16 at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center. Winners will be announced at Homecoming, which takes place August 1-3, 2008.
Dearborn residents, full-time students in Dearborn and full-time employees of Dearborn businesses can participate in one of six categories: 8-10 (Petite), 11-13 (Junior), 14-16 (Teen), 17-20 (Miss/Mr.), 21-49 (Adult) and 50 & up (Seniors).
Talent routines are not only limited to singing or dancing — participants can showcase any kind of talent, including magic acts, gymnastics, juggling, musical performances or stand-up comedy.
The winners will receive the honorary title of “Dearborn Star,” as well as a cash prize, a trophy and various performance opportunities throughout the year. For example, last year’s talent winners were involved in the Veterans Day ceremonies and holiday events at the Henry Ford Estate and will participate in this year’s Memorial Day Parade.
“Last year’s contestants had a great time being involved in the competition. For some contestants, it was their first time performing on stage. And you don’t often get an opportunity to perform in such a great theater,” said Chris Sickle, who created and coordinates the talent competition with Nancy Vitale.
Contestant finalists in each age group will then perform on August 2, at the Dearborn Homecoming, followed by the announcement of the winners.
All participants must fill out a registration form, which is available at www.cityordearborn.org or by calling Nancy Vitale at 313.846.8169. The registration fee is $25, and the application deadline is June 1.
All contestants are required to attend a mandatory meeting at 7 p.m. on July 9, which will include publicity photos, schedule of performances and orientation of the theater.
A few contest rules must be adhered to, as well:
• Performances must be a solo presentation, lasting no more than two minutes.
• Participants must have valid documentation of their age and their residence, school attendance or place of employment.
• All performances must be appropriate for family viewing.
• Contestants requiring music accompaniment must provide the music on a CD and bring it with them to the July 9 orientation meeting.
Tickets to the July 16 competition will be available at The Center box office starting on July 1 or on the day of the show for $8. The Homecoming performances will be free to all festival-goers.
