Deadline to apply for converter coupons Dec. 31
On Feb. 17, 2009, the nation will switch from analog (over-the-air) television to digital television. More than 21 million households will be affected by the switch and most are unaware of the change, according to civil rights leadership education website civilrights.org.
Using rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna for television signals will no longer work after the transition without a converter box.
While supplies last, the government is offering two free $40 coupons per household for converter boxes to keep households connected. Orders for convertor coupons must be submitted by Dec. 31
Apply for the coupons online at www.dtv2009.gov or cal 888-388-2009 by Dec. 31.
The coupons are limited.
Access to communications in the 21st century, civil rights groups warn, is a necessity, not a luxury. Many of the 21 million households that rely on analog television include low-income families, the elderly, minorities, the non-English speaking and individuals with disabilities.
Many need help making the transition.
