WASHINGTON, DC- Three provisions of the highly controversial Patriot Act received final approval from the U.S. Legislature on Thursday, Feb. 17, passing the House in a 279-143 final vote.
The provisions will be extended for 90 days after the passage if President Barack Obama signs the bill as expected.
Much of the act was made permanent in 2006 by the government, however.
The three provisions up for vote allow investigative agencies access to private information like business and library records with judicial oversight, roving wiretaps for “terrorism” suspects who change telephone numbers and surveillance of “lone wolf” suspects with alleged “terror ties” who have affiliations to known groups.
The expiration date for the provisions was Feb. 28 but the Senate approved the 90-day extension.
