DEARBORN – After saying he
would return to the city after his demonstration at City Hall on
April 29, extremist Florida Pastor Terry Jones’ organization “Stand
Up America” said he will return during the Arab International
Festival on June 17 according to various reports.
The festival runs along Warren Avenue
on the city’s east side each year.
Jones attempted to demonstrate against
what he termed “shari’a” and “jihad” in the
United States in front of the Islamic Center of America on April 22
but was instead forced to post a $1 peace bond and barred from returning to the
area around the ICA because he was found during a jury trial to be a
threat to “breach the peace.” Dearborn Mayor Jack O’Reilly said the city wanted to protect the safety and rights of worshipers in the area including four churches celebrating Good Friday and the ICA holding Friday prayers on the same day in an area that wasn’t equipped to handle many more people.
O’Reilly has
repeatedly denied such myths about “shari’a” and “jihad” and has called Jones an “antagonist”
who is using his visits as a platform to raise money after the vast
majority of his congregation left the Dove World Outreach Center of
which he is a pastor.
Jones argued the ruling violated his
free speech rights and the Ann-Arbor based conservative Thomas More
Law Center has filed an appeal on his behalf.
