WASHINGTON — A safety group has called on Michigan and 40 other states that haven’t banned the use of hand-held cellphones by drivers to wait until more data can be researched before passing new restrictions or rules.
The group, the Governors Highway Safety Association, submitted a 50-page report this past week making other recommendations including the bans on cell phone use by young drivers, adding more rumble strips to alert distracted drivers, and to improve crash data.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has made it a personal priority to reduce distracted driving. Michigan is among 34 states banning texts while driving, another recommendation that was made in the report as well.
