DEARBORN — Police are warning business owners against two potential scams.
The first involves a nonexistent “DTE disconnect team” that threatens to cut off a business’ power, unless it is in immediate receipt of a large sum of money electronically. Two businesses on Warren Avenue have fallen victim to this scam over this past summer.
In the other scam, business owners are targeted by a company that calls itself “Corporate Records Service.” The company sends an official looking “2013 annual minutes form” and instructs potential victims to fill it out and return it with a $125 payment to a Lansing address. Scammers claim that the payment is to prepare corporate meeting minutes, to satisfy a nonexistent state law.
The company threatens to dissolve businesses that do not fill the application and send the money.
The City urges business owners, who think they are being approached by con artists, to call the police department tip line at 313-943-3012.
Police also warn against sharing personal and financial information with strangers.
