HAMTRAMCK — City resident and Yemeni American Dr. Abdul Algazali came close to ousting incumbent Mayor Karen Majewski in the City’s mayoral race Tuesday, during the general election.
While Algazali managed to beat Majewski in the August primary elections by 61 votes, he lost to her by only 91 votes in the general election.
Algazali is currently serving his second term as council president and mayor pro-tem. He’s reportedly the first Arab American in the City’s history to hold the positions.
Because of his background in local government, Dr. Algazali had a good chance at becoming the first Yemeni and Muslim American mayor of Hamtramck. More than half the City’s population is comprised of Muslim Americans.
