One person is dead and three others injured in a shooting early this morning at Northern Arizona University, according to university officials. A suspect is in custody.
The shooting occurred about 1:20 a.m. Friday on the Flagstaff campus – just hours before President Obama was to arrive in Oregon to meet with families of victims in last week’s deadly shooting at Umpqua Community College.
Greg Fowler, chief of the university police department, said at a news conference that the shooting occurred after two groups of students clashed outside a dormitory. He said one student fired a handgun, hitting four other students.
One student died and three others are being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center, Fowler said.
He said 18-year-old Steve Jones, a freshman at the university, was arrested at the scene by university police. Police don’t know what caused the clash.
Fowler said police initiated an “active shooter” alert to warn students and staff to shelter in place.
A statement from Northern Arizona University said the shooting occurred at Mountain View Hall. The university websites said the hall houses the majority of the students involved in Greek organizations.
The university enrolls 27,000 students, most on its Flagstaff campus. The university operates satellite campuses at other Arizona cities.
The latest school shooting occurred eight days after 26-year-old Christopher Harper-Mercer shot a professor and students at Umpqua Community College. Eight students and the professor died and nine others were injured. Harper-Mercer killed himself in the classroom after being confronted by police.
Obama is scheduled to arrive in Eugene later this morning and meet privately with families at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Roseburg. He is not expected to make any public statement while in Oregon.
Following the Oregon shooting, Obama last week implored the country to address gun violence.
“Somehow this has become routine,” he said. “The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine.”
