If you ask members of Congress about their ideas to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, they would almost unanimously suggest the two-state solution.
While Israel is a UN recognized state with a viable economy, strong military and standing government, the missing part of the two-state solution is Palestine.
However, more than 350 members of Congress are expected to sign a letter urging the president to veto efforts by Palestinians to obtain statehood at the United Nations.
Unsurprisingly, the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee is lobbying aggressively to get lawmakers to sign the petition.
At AIPAC’s conference last week, political leaders from across the political divide equated denying Israel’s right to exist with anti-Semitism.
Now, U.S. legislators are being asked by AIPAC to reassert the unethical, biased, hypocritical policy of denying Palestine’s right to exist.
The letter stresses the need for negotiations, arguing that unilateral effort by Palestinians to gain recognition would hamper the peace process.
Newsflash — the peace process is dead. It has been dead. As long as the United States continues to unconditionally support the Israeli apartheid system in the West Bank, Israel will have no motive to compromise.
The Zionist state’s fanatic right wing leaders will not adhere to Palestinian demands after sitting with them at the same table. As a matter of fact, Israel was actively chewing up the land of the would-be Palestinian state in the West Bank by expanding Jewish-only settlements.
If Palestinians were to get a state, they have to seek it themselves; they cannot rely on the kindness of Israeli leaders.
“We remain committed to the objective of two states for two peoples – a democratic, Jewish state of Israel and a democratic, Palestinian state, living side-by-side in peace, security, and mutual recognition,” the letter reads.
A democratic state cannot be based on ethnic and religious affiliations. The reference to the “Jewish state” is insulting Israel’s minorities, including Palestinians whose presence there predates the establishment of the Zionist state.
The Arab American News urges Congress members, especially Michigan’s delegation, including Reps. Debbie Dingell, John Conyers and Brenda Lawrence, to remain neutral and not sign the letter.
