DEARBORN – The police department swore in nine new officers
during a ceremony held on August 24 with Mayor Jack O’Reilly and Dearborn Chief
Ron Haddad.
The nine new officers included three Arab Americans –
Mohamad Farhat, Ali Kattan, and Mahmoud Khalil.
The remaining six officers are: Nickolas Hook, Lance Owens, Shonte
White-Johnson, George Cipolla, Lauren Iavasile and Jacob Clause.
The department also welcomed two new parking ordinance
officers to the force; Hussein Abdallah and Amal Chammout.
Chammout has already garnered massive media attention for
being the first officer at the department to wear the hijab.
Each officer has completed in-house training and is assigned to patrol or parking enforcement duties.
The addition of the officers comes just a few months after
four Arab officers had left the force, claiming they were treated unfairly by
their colleagues.
Haddad had continued to stress that the department was
aiming to hire qualified individuals that represent city’s population.
