DEARBORN HEIGHTS — Dearborn Heights city councilman Tom Berry, who originally resigned from his position on May 16, decided to rescind his resignation.

He spoke about his decision to finish the rest of his term at the May 23 council meeting.

“I love this city…,” he said. “I decided that maybe resigning today was not the most responsible thing to do and the most responsible thing to do is to tough it out.”

Berry said he will finish the term but won’t seek re-election, even though his name is on Aug. 8 primary election ballot.

“I hope you respect the fact that although my name sits on that ballot, that you punch somebody else’s ticket because they are far more deserving and ready to serve,” he said.

Berry had been serving on the city council for 12 years, so his resignation letter did shock the rest of the members.

He wrote explaining to the mayor, city residents, employees, his fellow city council members and the council chair his decision as he sincerely expressed the honor he had working with “loyal and hardworking people” during his time serving.

He said that he has made mistakes, but at the same time learned during his time serving as councilman.

“The greatest pain of public service are the sacrifices a person must make of themselves and those near and dear to them,” he said. “Unfortunately, I can no longer make those sacrifices and I must turn my attention inward.”

In addition to Berry’s seat, those of Councilmembers Bob Constan, Margaret Horvath and Joseph Kosinski are up for grabs. However, only Constan is running for re-election.

Ali Almuna, Ned Apigian, Mo Baydoun, Bill Bazzi, Jeff Mallad, Denise Maxwell, Larry Mitchell, Lisa Oshanski and Tom Wencel are competing to win seats on the Council.
