DEARBORN — Now that the April 24 deadline to file nominating petitions for elected office has passed, Michiganians have an “un-official” look at candidates in the August 7 primary elections. That list will be finalized once the deadline to withdraw passes on April 27.

In the race for governor, two Libertarians — John J. Tatar and Bill Gelineau — three Democrats — Abdul El-Sayed, Gretchen Whitmer and Shri Thanedar — and four Republicans — Bill Schuette, Jim Hines, Brian Calley and Patrick Colbeck —  have filed.

All candidates collected signatures in order to turn in their petitions. Whitmer and Thanedar gathered the most signatures with 30,000 each, Schuette got 26,219, Calley got 25,000, Sayed got 24,000, Hines got 22,575, Gelineau got 21,187, Tatar got 18,521 and Colbeck got 18,046.

According to a press release, the Wayne County Clerk’s Office receives and processes nominating petition filings in in this year’s election cycle for the 13th U.S. Congressional District, county executive, county commission, judge of probate court, state senate and state representative.

Republican Doug Mitchell has filed to challenge State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn), who is seeking a second two-year term.

Hammoud said his campaign is focused on his work in the community and in Lansing.

“We’ve been able to cultivate support from all sides of the aisle within Dearborn,” Hammoud told The AANews. “I’ve only ever focused on being a Dearbornite first and foremost, putting policy solutions first and not being very partisan oriented.”

He added that more than half of the bills he’s introduced have been in a bipartisan fashion.

“We’re going to continue to knock on doors,” he said. “We’re going to continue to share our message with the residents and hopefully it will be enough to win us another term.”

Wayne County Circuit Court Judges Mariam Bazzi and Donald Knapp, Jr. are seeking re-election to their positions on the bench in the third circuit court. Both are running for partial terms that end on Jan. 1, 2021.

Gov. Snyder appointed Bazzi, who was then an assistant Wayne County prosecutor, to the bench on May 2, 2017. He appointed Knapp on April 4 to fill the vacancy left by the Feb. 5 death of Judge Richard Skutt.

For the six-year term, all 16 incumbents — Annette J. Berry, Gregory Dean Bill, Karen Braxton, Jerome C. Cavanagh, Kevin J. Cox, Paul John Cusick, Prentis Edwards, Jr., Edward Ewell, Jr. Adel A. Harb, Dana Margaret Hathaway, Charles S. Hegarty, Catherine L. Heise, Qiana Denise Lillard, Kathleen M. McCarthy, Leslie Kim Smith and Deborah A. Thomas — are being challenged by John C. Cahalan, Delicia Coleman Morson, Tracy E. Green, Bridget Mary Hathaway, Suzette Samuels and Regina Thomas.

Eight Democrats have filed to serve the 13th Congressional District in the partial term remaining in the seat vacated by former U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit) last December.

Former State Rep. Rashida Tlaib, State Sen. Ian Conyers (D-Detroit), hedge fund manager John Conyers III, attorney Michael Gilmore, Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones, former state Rep. Mary Waters, Kentiel D. White and Westland Mayor Bill Wild will compete to complete Conyers term.

Ian Conyers, John Conyers III, Gilmore, Jones, Tlaib and Wild are also running for the two-year term ending in January 2021. They will face off against fellow Democrats Kimberly Hill Knott, Shanelle Jackson and State Sen. Coleman Young II (D-Detroit), as well as Republican David A. Dudenhoefer.

Four Democrats and one Republican have filed to run for the open state senate seat in the third district, which covers Dearborn, Melvindale and part of Detroit. The Democratic candidates are Wayne County Commission Chairman Gary Woronchak, State Rep. Slyvia Santana (D-Detroit), Anita Belle and Terry T. Burrell. The Republican candidate is Kathy Stecker.

Woronchak currently represents the 13th District in the Wayne County Commission. Four candidates — all Democrats — have filed to run for the seat he’s vacating: Dearborn Real Estate associate broker Sam Baydoun, Abdiurahman Alsaady, Brian Stone and Dearborn City Councilman Tom Tafelski.

Wayne County Executive Warren Evans faces challenges from Republicans Adam Salam Adamski and Dennis Curran.

19th District Court Judge Sam Salamey and 20th District Court Judge David D. Turfe filed for re-election via affidavidits on Dec. 1 and Dec. 14, respectively. Neither face a challenger.

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich) faces challenges from Republicans John James and Sandy Pensler as she seeks another six-year term.

Candidates who make it through the Aug. 7 primary election will compete in their respective races on Nov. 6.
