DEARBORN — Dr. Abdul El-Sayed continues to rack up endorsements from across the state and around the country in his bid to be Michigan’s next governor. On Monday, State Rep. Hammoud (D-Dearborn) became the latest elected official to endorse Abdul El-Sayed’s gubernatorial campaign.

A proud son of immigrants, Rep. Hammoud currently represents the 15th district, which includes his hometown of Dearborn, during his first term in the Michigan House of Representatives. He earned his bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and his master’s in public health from the University of Michigan.

An epidemiologist like El-Sayed, Rep. Hammoud has been a leading voice for public health in Michigan throughout his time in the legislature. He cited El-Sayed’s “Michicare” healthcare plan as one of the main reasons for his endorsement.

“Dr. El-Sayed’s robust and bold policy agenda is why I’m throwing my support behind him for governor,” Hammoud said. “I know that Abdul’s policy provides the solutions Michiganders need: A single-payer system to make health care affordable and accessible; a path to reinvest in our public education system and a real plan to reduce auto insurance rates and end redlining.”

El-Sayed expressed his gratitude for Rep. Hammoud’s support.

“I am honored and humbled to receive the endorsement from Rep. Abdullah Hammoud,” he said. “Representative Hammoud represents the future of our party and our state, and his leadership on issues like auto insurance reform and environmental racism has made him an indispensable advocate for justice in Lansing.”

El-Sayed has also been endorsed by progressive leaders and organizations across the state and nation, including the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Democracy for America, Justice Democrats, The People for Bernie Sanders, the Michigan Nurses Association and Our Revolution.

The Democratic primary election takes place on August 7 and the general election is on November 6. Hammoud said he encourages voters to go to the polls and support El-Sayed as he works to be the first Muslim governor in American history.

“We need a governor who is willing to tackle these problems head-on, and Abdul is that person.”
