DEARBORN — Monday, Oct. 4 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 2 statewide election. Applicants can register at their Secretary of State branch or clerk’s office, and must be U.S. citizens and at least 18-years old by election day. Voters must be residents of Michigan, and the city or township they register at.
To register by mail, applicants can visit the Department of State’s website, www.Michigan.gov/sos to obtain the mail-in form. Those who register by mail and are first time voters must vote in person, unless they are eligible to vote under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, are disabled, 60 years of age or older or hand-deliver their applications to local clerks.
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land said voters have the opportunity to be heard at the highest levels of state government. “Your vote is your voice,” Land said.
To qualify for an absentee ballot you must be 60 years old or older, physically unable to attend the polls, not present in the community on election day, not available due to religious reasons or appointed to work as an election inspector in a precinct outside of your precinct of residence. Applications to receive absentee ballots by mail must be submitted by 2.p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30. Emergency absentee ballots are available on election day until 4 p.m. Voters who obtain an absentee ballot on Nov. 1 must fill it out in the clerk’s office.
Residents can visit the Michigan Voter Information Center at www.Michigan.gov/vote to check their registration status. Voters who don’t have either may present a U.S. passport, federal or state government-issued photo identification, military identification card with photo, tribal identification card with photo or student identification with photo from a high school, college or university.
