LANSING — A new poll commissioned by the Detroit Free Press and WXYZ-TV Channel 7 finds Barack Obama leading both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. These results came three days after Obama gave his State of the Union Address.
The EPIC/MRA Survey of 600 likely voters found Obama was favored over Romney in a head to head match, with 48 percent voting for Obama, while Romney trailed with 40 percent. These results come as a surprise given Romney’s Michigan roots. He grew up in Oakland County and is the son of the late former Michigan Governor, George Romney.
Obama’s lead widens even more when pitted against Gingrich. 51 percent of the likely voters preferred Obama, while only 38 percent preferred the former U.S. House Speaker.
Michigan’s presidential primary is Feb. 28. Up until the conduction of this poll, Romney had been considered the favorite.
