UN monitors in Syria have confirmed that a horrific massacre in the village of Houla has left at least 116 people dead and 300 more injured, including 49 children and 34 women. Damascus denies government forces were involved, but the international community has been quick to decry President Bashar al Assad amid calls for his ouster.

Major-General Robert Mood, head of the UN monitoring mission in Syria, said some of the dead had been killed by shelling and others shot at close range, but did not attribute responsibility for the close-range killing.

The UN Security Council has issued a statement condemning “in the strongest possible terms” the massacre of civilians in the Syrian village of Houla.
