HAMTRAMCK — May 14 marked the last day that candidates were able to submit petitions to run for office for the City of Hamtramck’s 2013 elections. Any candidates, who wish to withdraw their petitions, must do so by May 17.
The City of Hamtramck is governed by a council manager form of government. The City’s elected mayor is the chief executive officer. The city council appoints the city manager, who serves as the chief administrative officer. The council consists of six elected members. City council resolutions are passed by majority votes. The mayor votes on council resolutions in the case of a tie.
Hamtramck’s six city council members are elected to four-year terms. Three council seats are made available every two years. In the upcoming elections, Mohamad Hassan, Abdul Algazali and Cathie Gordon’s positions will be challenged. In addition, the position of Councilman Tom Jankowski, who is stepping down for personal reasons, will need to be replaced.
Councilpersons Andul Algazali and Cathie Gordon are not running for reelection on the council, as they have decided to run for mayor.
