MICHIGAN — Democratic U.S. Rep. Gary Peters and Michigan Republican Party issued separate statements regarding the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
“I want to wish Ramadan Kareem to Michigan’s Muslim community as the sighting of the full moon takes place this weekend and Ramadan begins,” Peters, a candidate for U.S. Senate wrote. “Ramadan is a truly unique time where Muslim Americans across the country reflect, pray, and acknowledge important events in Islamic history. Michigan is home to the largest Muslim population in the United States and I’ve had the honor of representing Muslims throughout Southeast Michigan. Muslim Americans have been important entrepreneurial job creators in our state, and their contributions to numerous industries in Michigan have made our state stronger in countless ways. I thank our Muslim community for all they have done for our great state, and I wish them the best as they mark the beginning of this important time.”
Michigan Republican Party Chairman Bobby Schostak issued the following statement: “…During this time, families grow closer, religious ties grow stronger and time is spent giving back to the less fortunate. All Michiganders, regardless of their religious background, can appreciate these honorable qualities. We recognize the contributions of Muslim Americans here in Michigan and wish all families who are fasting a blessed Ramadan.”
