EAST LANSING — Attorneys for Michigan State University announced on Tuesday that the university has reached a nearly $30 million settlement to compensate three students who survived the mass shooting on campus in East Lansing in 2023.
Attorneys Mick Grewal and Scott Weidenfeller of Okemos-based Grewal Law stated that a $14.25 million settlement was reached for Nate Statly, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Troy Forbush, who was shot in the chest, received a $2.5 million settlement.
Separately, attorney William Azkoul of Gruel Mills in Grand Rapids said a $13 million settlement was reached for his client, Yukai (John) Hao, a Chinese international student who was shot in the back, resulting in paralysis from the chest down.
“These settlements close a chapter in these survivors’ healing journeys,” the attorneys said in a joint statement, expressing pride in contributing to “achieving justice for these exceptional young people.”
The lawsuits filed by Statly, Forbush and Hao were among several brought against the university in connection with the February 13, 2023 shooting, which left three students dead and five others injured.
In the months following the shooting, four of the five injured students and the families of the three deceased students filed lawsuits against the university. This past February, the fifth injured student, Justin Buman, filed a $50 million federal lawsuit, alleging the university created a hazardous environment by failing to install locks on classroom doors.
In December 2023, the families of the three students who were killed — Alexandria Verner, Brian Fraser and Arielle Anderson — reached a collective settlement of $15 million with the university. All three were between 19- and 20-years-old at the time of the shooting.
To date, MSU has agreed to pay approximately $45 million in total settlements, while two additional injured students are still in negotiations through their attorneys.
The gunman in the Michigan State massacre was Anthony Dwayne McRae, a 43-year-old African American man. According to authorities, McRae entered the MSU campus and opened fire in Berkey Hall, killing two students and injuring four others. He then walked to the Student Union building, where he killed another student and injured one more.
After the attacks, McRae left the campus and walked roughly four miles to his home in nearby Lansing, where he later died by suicide.
