LANSING – A total of about two-thirds of babies born to Michigan women in their early twenties are born outside of marriage according to a new report by the Michigan League for Human Services organization.
The number has risen significantly in the past ten years although teen pregnancy numbers were higher in the past according to officials. The report added that the state surpasses many others in prenatal care, however. According to the Detroit Free Press, births to unmarried women increased by a 6% total. About 40% of births in 2009 were to unmarried women compared with 34% in 2000 according to The Kids Count in Michigan’s study.
