Mohammed Morsi, who’s backed by the Muslim Brotherhood won Egypt’s presidency today. His election marks a new era of hope for the country both politically and socially. His leadership comes after Egypt’s former president, Hosni Mubarak who ruled Egypt with an iron fist for more than three long decades was ousted by his own people February 2011, as part of the popular and historic Arab Spring uprisings.

After claiming victory Morsi made a statement referencing the protestors who lost their lives in last year’s uprisings that toppeled Mubarak. “Their blood will not go in vain,” Morsi has been quoted as saying in the press. He is Egypt’s first Islamist president.
