LANSING — The Michigan Department of Treasury announced the new Michigan Unclaimed Property website on Oct. 1.
Business claimants had been required to file paper claims and documentation through the U.S. Postal Service, but can now upload them directly to Michigan Unclaimed Property.
Now, claimants can access enhanced search options, check on previously-filed claims and file new claims and verifying documentation online.
Holders of unclaimed property will now also be able to file reports and make payments to the state Treasury Department electronically.
“The new website is a significant upgrade to the property claimant’s experience,” said Deputy State Treasurer Ann Good, who oversees Treasury’s financial and administrative service programs. “This is a major step forward in Treasury’s effort to go paperless while offering streamlined and efficient services to taxpayers.”
Michigan Unclaimed Property returned $400 million to owners and heirs in the last four years, which includes $90 million in the last year.
The new Michigan Unclaimed Property website is available at www.michigan.gov/unclaimedproperty.
