Women will feel at ease
in this breast care center

D
on't be fooled by the mild manner of Dr.
MajdAburabia, breast surgery specialist at
Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center.
This woman believes in taking charge of one's health
by being proactive and fearless.
"Most lumps are benign," she says, "and when
found early, we have an over 90% cure rate."
Dr.Aburabia has a history many in the commu-
nity can identify with. Of Palestinian heritage, she
was born and raised in Kuwait. The 1991 GulfWar
expedited her family's move to the U.S., which had
been planned anyway. She is engaged to a third gen-
eration SyrianAmerican attorney.
Dr.Aburabia is a fellowship-trained breast sur-
geon, who completed her breast surgical oncology
fellowship atWilliam Beaumont Hospital in Royal
Oak, Michigan. She completed her residency in gen-
eral surgery at the University of Florida and Shands
in Jacksonville and attained her medical degree from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill-
School of Medicine.
She is trained in the management of benign and
malignant surgical breast
disease, new techniques
in breast preservation
and oncoplastic surgery,
including skin-sparing and
nipple-sparing mastec-
tomy.
Dr.Aburabia's office is
in the Oakwood Dear-
born Medical Park across
the street from the main
hospital.
Mammograms are
performed in the Breast
Care Center located in
the lower level of the
sparkling clean building.
An all female staff cares for the patients. There is a
radiologist available to read mammograms 24/7.
Most women who need surgery have it on an out-
patient basis in the Breast Care Center, spending
one night in the overnight observation area. Halal
food is available at Oakwood and of course, there
areArabic speaking staff. Dr.Aburabia also works
with a plastic surgeon who begins reconstruction of
the breasts if necessary at the time of the original
surgery. If chemotherapy or radiation therapy is
needed, the main hospital or the oncologist's office
is used.
Dr.Aburabia says to stick with theAmerican Can-
cer Society's recommendation that every woman
have an annual mammogram beginning at age 40. She
also says that family history is very important. If
there are multiple cases of cancer of the same or
different types in your family, seek the services of a
genetic counselor. Dr.Aburabia can guide you in this.
Dr.Aburabia is board-certified in general surgery
by theAmerican Board of Surgery. She is a member
of theAmerican Society of Breast Surgeons, the
American College of Surgeons and theAmerican
Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr.Aburabia is a dream come true for Arab
American andAmerican Muslim women. From the
same culture, speaking the language, in a new build-
ing designed for women's care and at the top of her
field in education and certification, she should be
your go-to person for breast care.
Dr. Aburabia:
"Stick with the American
Cancer Society's
recommendation that
every woman have an
annual mammogram
beginning at age 40. "
