BLOOMFIELD HILLS – Two events slated to be held at the Bloomfield Hills Baptist Church on the anniversary of 9/11 have been cancelled.
The Arab American News confirmed the cancellation with the church on Tuesday after the Freep reported that it had gotten a one-line email from the church announcing it will no longer hold the events.
The first of the two events was to have been held on Wednesday. Shahram Hadian, pastor and self proclaimed ex-Muslim, had planned to deliver a talk in which he questioned interfaith cooperation. The event was titled, “9/11 Forgotten.”
Pastor Donald McKay at the Bloomfield Hills Baptist Church openly holds Islamophobic views and is convinced Muslims are committed to overthrowing the United States and seeking world domination.
Lawmakers, including U.S. Reps. Debbie Dingell (D-Dearborn), Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township) and state Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) denounced the events earlier this week.
Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), said his organization welcomed the cancellation and that its priorities were to prevent “any further dehumanization of Muslims in Michigan.”
He also said CAIR-MI would be amenable to a future interfaith dialogue with the church.
Hammond and state Rep. Mari Manoogian (D-Birmingham) issued a further statement following news of the cancellation.
“The cancellation of these events is in the best interest of everyone in our communities and state,” they said. “Hatred and intolerance have no place in America, and this latest development shows the importance of calling out hate when we see it.
“Instead of using diversity as a reason to divide us, we welcome the opportunity to recommit ourselves to fostering dialogue and greater understanding with one another to build a stronger, safer, more tolerant community. We remain optimistic that our communities can move beyond this toward a more united and welcoming Michigan.”
